March Mentoring

Did you have a mentor who helped shape your career? A young TV reporter turned communications executive recently thanked me for making a difference as her mentor almost 20 years ago, and I realized I never had any female mentors as I climbed the ladder in TV news. It was truly sink or swim with occasional advice from a consultant or an experienced photographer on the scene. Here’s to helping others in your profession – no matter their age – but especially the younger generation who can learn so much from your years of experience – the highs, the lows, and everything in between!

Service Award

No matter your politics, it’s pretty special to receive a signed letter from the President of the United States – along with a pin and medal with the Presidential seal. It’s awarded around the country in Gold, Silver and Bronze for consistent and authentic service to others. I got to award this honor to 10 deserving student volunteers who are connected to Joshua’s Heart Foundation – including my twins who received their second Gold President’s Award for serving at least 250 hours in a year’s time. I can’t recommend highly enough getting your kids involved by middle school in some form of community service. Make it a family affair, get up early on a weekend morning with your kids to show them the way, and they’ll be hooked once they see the impact they make helping others and bringing a smile.

I’ve often heard that FIU teaches a course on how to stay composed while on air and uses clips of my reporting and anchoring as an example – what a nice compliment! So I decided to visit the Caplin School of Journalism on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus, and what an impressive program they’re running. Dean Schriner has visited my alma mater, Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, and other prominent graduate programs to help FIU frame its undergrad and grad programs. From everything I saw firsthand, it’s paying off! The students were so receptive as we talked about improving on-air presence and energy, connecting with your audience, making a resume reel that shines, and negotiating contracts. Keep up the great work, Panthers. Find the emotion in every story, and I’ll be back soon with more feedback!
