2024, A Year of Firsts

Seperator

When was the last time you pushed yourself to try something totally new and unexpected? When a high school friend I hadn’t seen in 30 years asked me to play a role in his first film – how could I say no? There were so many unknowns for months, but just by trusting the process, it all came together in an incredible experience with a fantastic cast & crew – and my first trip back to Chicago since graduate school. Watch out – it could be the beginning of more movie roles to come!

First Film –
I’m Hooked!

Table reads, pink drafts, 6am call times and “shorts” – movie shoots have their own unique lingo – very different from a TV news studio. But when I delivered my lines in front of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Chicago, the whole crew said, “Are you a real reporter?” So I guess I was well-cast for the role!

Come next year – you’ll see Shay Mitchell, Rebecca DeMornay, Nate Mann, Kunal Nayyar and more familiar faces starring in The Up and Comer, and you’ll catch me playing a reporter on the scene of breaking news. The acclaimed director is Chris Long of The Americans fame and Gilmore Girls, and the Writer & Producer Howard Roughan is a #1 NYT best-selling author and frequent collaborator with James Patterson.

First Speech to Cornell Students

There’s always a certain nostalgia to being back on your college campus, and being asked to speak is a special honor. Way back when I was at MSNBC, I came to campus to address leading female alumnae, but this time it was all about students interested in broadcasting, marketing, and communications. This “Career Conversation” was so well received – next Spring, it’s going to be a whole series called “Interview Skills with Laurie Jennings.”

First Keynote to
500 Student Journalists

They never had this when I was growing up – a day-long competition for high school students to meet a deadline and show they might have what it takes to be a journalist. The pressure is huge! When I was asked to inspire 500 of these young competitors before they set off to gather their entries for the Florida State Press Association contest, the answer had to be “YES.”

Whether TV, radio, newspaper, yearbook or social media, I told them: “I’ve done all 5, and it all comes down to great storytelling and finding the emotion – make me care!”

Good luck to these budding journalists – you’re all super fortunate to have these real-world experiences at a very young age. Double check your facts, find the human element and the emotion, and go get ’em!
